Medicine balls

Medicine balls are excellent for building core strength and developing toned abs. There are lots of different exercises that can be done with a medicine ball, allowing you to keep your fitness routine varied and therefore keeping you motivated. Medicine balls come in a variety of materials and designs, and what you want to do with it should determine what you get. Leather medicine balls look and feel great, but have less grip than textured rubber balls. Medicine balls with handles provide an even better grip which can make certain exercises easier, but the bounce may be inhibited if you want to do exercises like medicine ball slams as you no longer have a simple spherical surface. Read our full medicine ball guide.

What is a Medicine Ball?

A medicine ball is a weighted sphere that adds resistance to your exercises. Medicine balls come in a range of weights and can be used for a full body workout. Medicine balls sometimes called exercise balls are used to develop muscular strength, improve flexibility and for rehabilitation.
Many of the exercises done with Medicine Balls incorporate movements found in everyday life, which makes med ball workouts a great form of functional fitness training.
There are two main types of Medicine Balls. The traditional Medicine ball is completely spherical and is usually made using leather or rubber which makes it easy to grip when exercising.
The other type of Medicine ball sometimes referred to as a double grip Medicine ball, has handles on either side. These handles allow you to grip the Medicine ball in a range of positions and are great for one handed exercises.
Both types of Medicine ball are excellent for developing all round fitness so it comes down to your personal preference when choosing between the two.
